Tax Records

Through the years tax records have been widely recognized as an important source of genealogical evidence. When many of the early census schedules were lost they were replaced (reasonably well) by contemporaneous tax lists. Others have been published separately; and many others have been microfilmed. In some places, during the early periods, you can follow your ancestors through the tax lists as if they (the lists) were a yearly census.
